Parable of the Barber

A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. As the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation. They talked about so many things and various subjects. When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said:

"I don't believe that God exists."
"Why do you say that?" asked the customer.
"Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn't exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving God who would allow all of these things."

The customer thought for a moment, but didn't respond because he didn't want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop. Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and unkempt.

The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said to the barber:

"You know what? Barbers do not exist."
"How can you say that?" asked the surprised barber.
"I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!"
"No!" the customer exclaimed. "Barbers don't exist because if they did, there would be no  people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside."
"Ah, but barbers DO exist! That's what happens when people do not come to me."
"Exactly!" affirmed the customer.
"That's the point! God, too, DOES exist!

That's what happens when people do not go to Him and don't look to Him for help. That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world."

  1. NICE ONE! :D

And to add to "Why are there suffering and pain and all that stuff?" Boils down to man's consequences to sin and wrong choices made, either by the person or by those that went before him.

  4. good story and has a point....i remember one of my mexican co-worker who is an atheist...that's their reasoning...he loves to argue with me but i just smile at him....he really wants to prove that God never exist...i just kept my cool and just be nice to him...and one time he asked me why among the workers in the office, i am the only one who is cool and nice...that's where i answered him, because God exist in me....Jesus reigns in my heart and that's who my Saviour is,nice and compassionate...

  5. Very Good Parable! It reminds me of this parable:

From the "Good News" magazine, in their small article "Must be Applied", I quote:

"A soap manufacturer, not a Christian, was walking with a minister. Said the soap maker: "The Gospel you preach hasn't done much good, for there's still a lot of wickedness and wicked people".

The preacher made no immediate reply, but they soon passed a child making mud pies. It was then the preacher's turn and he said:

"Soap hasn't done much good in this world, I see, for there's still a lot of dirt and many dirty people.

"Oh well", answered the manufacturer, "Soap is useful only when it is applied".

"EXACTLY" was the minister's reply: "SO IT IS WITH THE GOSPEL WE PROCLAIM ."

  6. very enlightening story.. but the things is... there is quite a difference between the truth and this parable.

God is wise and just. He knows what is good for all of us. Unfortunately, pain and suffering is a part of that process- of exercising His sovereign will- the big picture.

We can always ask our barber to trim our hair and make us look good, then we pay him. But he will never tell us we should be patient and suffer, and let our hair and beard grow long and dirty, simply because that is what he wants for us to experience.

Old man Job knows it very well.

    5-cents. peace
